Beautiful table!! I've been enjoying my VPI Super Scoutmaster with 3d arm and rim drive for years. They make a great product. The only thing I would suggest is replace your glass shelf with a thick piece of maple board for better performance. Enjoy the music!

Heindmuse....you're right. I was talking to Harry about the Superscout/Rim Drive/Classic platter....He told me it was a small tick below the Direct Drive....Actually indistinguishable.
Hi SGreen, I've heard the Direct Drive a few times, at VPI headquarters and at a demonstration show in NYC with Harry. The SSM w/rimdrive, 3D arm, and Classic platter is excellent, but the Direct Drive is in its own league with rock solid PRT and imaging. I'd say maybe 2% to 3% better. But that difference will cost big time in $.
I've extracted better performance on my SSM with TerraCone feet and solid footers under the SAMA- if you haven't done so yet, get rid of the rubber footers under the SAMA! I also got a handmade leather mat by Jake's thru Amazon for only $25, a beautiful mat, highly recommended, great at eliminating static, and improves performance on the Classic platter. Harry also made me a very special oil pumping bearing with a new Classic platter that I use with a light synthetic oil (Liquid Bearings).
Thanks for the input Heindmuse....I have my Sscout SAMA on their original foam feet. (you say you have yours solidly secure). I tried your way, but mine sounds better to these ears. My thinking is that the foam feet absorb any out of roundness in the Classic platter and also subdue the motor noise from the SAMA traveling to the supporting table. The turntable itself is solid on Bearpaws. (also made by Edansound). I tried the Terastones (I tried all three different balls), yet came away with the brass Bearpaws sounding best. I don't use any mat at all...tried VPI's rubber thing, but go naked now. I'm not saying your setup is not as good as mine, but my setup works best for me. I'm talking to Harry about updating my arm cable...I have Discovery, and just discovered that Nordost has a new (better?) cable for the printed arm...and regarding the maglev new platter. There's always something!! :)
Maple is really hard and hard things are really good transmitters of sound. Perhaps its better than glass but if I'm going to replace the glass shelf why maple? I hope this doesn't come off as snarky because I don't mean it to be. I am genuinely curious. Even VPI suggests maple. Why not a rubber/foam puck under the feet or something, something that is better at absorbing sound energy?Where do you recommend I get the maple?
Thanks!
Nate

Texan....the idea is to eliminate as much movement as possible. A springy base is the last thing you want with a VPI turntable. I've spiked mine using large brass cones...a huge upgrade.
.
Congratulations on your new table!
For cheap and cheerful support, try bamboo.
Get to Ikea and buy two of the large Aptitlig cutting boards (about $30 for both.) Place them side by side on your existing shelf. Under the four corners of each, place a small dab of Blu-tak adhesive as a lossy coupling. Place your 'table's feet directly on the bamboo. Enjoy more solid images, a blacker background and less high frequency "chatter".

Good luck.
Here are 2 shots of 3/4" Plyboo.
Note the layering pattern which will certainly effect resonance and vibration transmission.
Some research is indicated to clarify which may or may NOT be best and perhaps WHY.
This is '1ply' and '4ply' while a few other configurations are available.
Nice shots, eh?
