Did you ever try different combos re. the limestone / sorbothane / slate mixture? Fer instance, maybe just limestone or just slate would've sounded better?
Can I urge you do try, say, cork in place of Sorbothane. There is a guy on AA who says that Sorbothane is baaaad for SQ - wherever it is used!

Surprisingly, I did try cork. It is the worst stuff in the world for vinyl. Well, perhaps not the worst. Felt is worse; I tried that, too. Anyway, when I had cork in-between the limestone and slate, I could tap my knuckles on the slate and it would ring like a bell. I replace the cork with sorbothane and it is dead silent.
I used an Audioquest Sorbothane mat on my Thorens TD-126 for over 15-years and I loved it. The sorbothane reduced vinyl surface noise to a minimum. Music sounded like it was coming from a black background. The only thing better than a sorbothane platter mat is vacuum hold-down, which I now have with my Sota Millennia Vacuum turntable.
Yeah, I don't know who told you cork was good, but I can tell you from experience that cork really sucks. The only thing worse is felt.
I wish you could hear my system. It really sounds fantastic. I have been to five or six major audio shows and I've never heard a vinyl front-end I liked better. I have friends with equally expensive and impressive vinyl front-ends and they don't sound any better than mine. Most of them don't sound as good.
Anyway, you are absolutely wrong about sorbothane.
Best regards,

Is the platter mat surface on the Millenium made of felt? I owned a Star Sapphire Series III, also with vacuum, and the surface of its platter was felt, which is why I ask.
No! The Millennia has a thin layer of cloth glued onto what I think is a hard rubber surface. I don't know what the cloth is -- perhaps cotton -- but it's definitely not felt. It's woven cloth.
I'm surprised Sota used felt on your Star Sapphire. I was under the impression that older Sota vacuum platters had a bare hard rubber surface and that they added a thin layer of cloth to prevent scratching the vinyl. Did your Star Sapphire come from the factory with a felt platter mat?
I guess it just goes to show that you can certainly pick up the wrong advice from the Internet! ;-)) So I won't bother trying 1/4" of cork under my power transformers, in place of the Sorbothane I've been using for decades. :-))
However, whilst I agree that vacuum hold-down is a great concept ... while a Sorbothane mat might well reduce vinyl surface noise to a minimum ... it could well have negatives in terms of decay and harmonic profile?
As I'm sure you know, the LP12 has a felt mat - so I used one for many years. But recently, a mate of mine who's been experimenting with different mat materials has decided a foam mat (with the centre cut out, so the label is not raised) makes the best sound. Even better than a leather mat - with the centre cut out - which was last year's favourite. :-))

Andy
