The SRA "guideline" that you hear about (92 degrees) is just to be in the middle of the range 0 to 5 degrees which is the allowable range for cutting angle. It is not an absolute and you may well find a record for which your "90 degrees" is actually optimum. That said, with lacquer springback effects, most of the time you want to be at least 91 degrees.
What is wrong with 90?
Nothing except that SRA mismatch results in greater IMD than VTA mismatch, so if you play a record that really needs say 92 degrees then it could sound rather gritty...

what I am seeing is that the Technics headshell puts the cartridge lower than a Sumiko or an Ortofon I have on hand. I can achieve a better angle using those headshells. I will give that a try.
The Technics headshell is angled up by 0.63 degrees and the arm height reference is calibrated to accommodate this.
The Sumiko is designed to be "flat" i.e no tilt. However, the plug mounting axis shifts the cartridge up by 3.15mm. Just by switching to this headshell will give you an extra 1.3 degrees on the SRA without physically changing the arm height. Every headshell brand (apart from OEM designs which are rebranded) I've measured up is slightly different in the reference mounting axis.
I've mentioned this a few times on the forum, but no seems to have paid attention, or didn't understand it...

thanks
You're welcome :)
BTW, I should clarify that for the Sumiko HS12 the CUMULATIVE effect of the tilt and plug axis effectively shifts the arm height by 3.15mm. The plug axis is actually 1.37mm with respect to the standard Technics position, but the additional shift is to compensate for the "lack of" tilt. An alternative or additional approach is of course to use a thinner mat such as the Funk Firm acrylic mat to get extra (effective) arm height. The Ortofon is one headshell I haven't tried and therefore can't tell you any details about it's tilt and plug axis relative to the Technics.

I was using the 4mm Funk mat and switched to a 2mm acrylic mat. It brought it to where it is now. I have a generic headshell I am preparing, painting it red first, waiting for it to dry, putting heatshrink on the arm lift, which may bring it into range. This headshell is higher and of same weight. The Sumiko would be too heavy. The cat is already heavy with two pieces of brass and brass screws.
Almost there.
