I found a place to get my cart but when I asked how much do you charge to put it on and set it properly you know overhang blah blah well what do you think a fair price should be? I thought it would be free but its not. Like to know before I put out any money. Thanks.

.....way back when I bought my Thorens TD160 new from a local dealer.
Portland, Or. 1975. Of Sandy Blvd east side kinda close in. The owner was an acquaintance, friend of a friend that knew my family, etc. the name of the store, I can't remember. But I had asked him if he could get the Thorens for me. He did and I came down to pick it up.The store policy was to include cartridge installation with every turntable purchase. But I wasn't buying a new cartridge to go with since I had a couple of Shures ready to go on it when I got the thing home. But they didn't quite yet know this.
As I walked in I spotted the store owner as he was in the middle of placing a 'no name' changer up on a display rack. He looked up at me, fumbled and the record player did a full forward summersault to the floor. (Layout) From just above chest height on the rack to the tile floor. On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd have given that dive a solid 6. A fairly clean drop. Only touched the rack once on its way down. Nice vertical position at point of contact with floor. If it had had toes, they'd have been pointed. It's not like I was trying to spook him, but the drop did manage to wreck that changer quite effectively. Bent tonearm and cracked plastic parts here and there. Wow. Death.
Right after that another sales guy asked me if I wanted the store to install the cartridge for me. I replied that I was comfortable intalling that myself,.... and that I had a choice of cartridges back home. No bother. ahem.
I paid my $220 for the Td160, still sealed up in its ship carton, and carried it out the door.
Ah, now I remember. The store name was "Westmans". It wasn't there for more than a couple of years. The kind of place that was trying to move mid-fi japanese gear at discount prices. This must have been close to the end of that era. I don't know what eventually that store owner moved on to, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't hi-fi gear.
Anyway, the message is that it was fairly common to expect free cartridge setup/alignment with the purchase of a new record player. I'm not so sure if purchase of a cartridge (only) would get the same service. But that has never been an issue for me. I always prefer to take responsibility for every aspect of my own turntable setup. The only way I can 'know' it was done the way it should be. Or if not, no one to blame but my self.
end of miserable anecdote.

You shouldn't pay anyone to do that job. You should do it yourself. However, I always charge $200.
Don't get much work do you? ;-'
I don't think $200 out of line if a guy is spending a day setting a cart up.
I'am sure John would be using the proper alignment protractor, microscope, test records, & a lot of mathematical equations that for the life of me I will never understand .
$200 bucks easy.
I'm retired! ;-)
If the former, I'd guess $30-50. if a store, they will usually do it for free.
Opus 33 1/3
$25. Anyway, that's what I would charge if somebody asked me to do it for him.

That has always been my experience. If there is a charge it should be no more than one hour of labor.

Yea its a brick and mortar store and the price of the cart was fine, $100 bucks but then when I asked if they would set it for me they said yes 45 dollars for the mount and set everything up. Hey I am not physically capable to even pick the TT up. Yes I hate to say that but am seriously disabled. I dont want a hand out but I bought the table there years ago and a pair of speakers but in my condition I have to go with what is available bad enough I have to have someone take me and the table over due to being disabled.
Thanks for your honesty people. Hated to bring up my condition. Oh well life is what it is.
Where do you live ? There is probably some kind soul on this site that will do it for you at no charge!
Actually I did this for a guy who lived near my In-laws. He put up a request for help here.
(He had two tables similar to mine, with the same tonearms as mine, and one cartridge which was the same as mine and another different cartridge. I set up both tables for him before Thanksgiving several years ago. I worked on the tables for about four or five hours. Oh well, it meant just that much less time with the In-laws!)
What cartridge did you buy? Can you buy it cheaper online? If so, why not buy the cartridge where you can get the best deal and then take the cartridge and your turntable to the store so they can mount it for $45? You can save some money.
Good luck,
John Elison
Bringing up your condition helps. It lets people know what options are available. Thanks for being honest.

Would you ask your doctor for a special price ?
Your highly off-topic and conceited remark is noted.

A false analogy.

You're a repeat customer and, regardless of your condition, they should provide that service to you.
