It's time to replace the 12ax7s on my Herron VTPH-1. It currently has Sovtek 12ax7WAs. Is it best to replace them with the same tube or are there better ones for this particular phono preamp?

FYI- I saw a post on another board saying that the EH gold pin 12ax7 does work nicely with the Herron. Keith tried them and said they were a good alternate.... so I bought a set. Head to head to my ear, they are way more open and dynamic which is exactly the direction I've been heading in with my new amps and cartridge. Probably give up 3% on voice smoothness, maybe, but also that could improve once they have a few hours on them. Not a huge investment and worth a try!
....that he tunes his equipment to the characteristics of the tubes he supplies, and he thinks that they sound best with the original tubes. However, I don't think you can get Sovtek 12ax7WA tubes any more.

I'm not sure whether Andy@Vintage Audio Services is still in business,but if he is -that is who I would contact.He knows his tubes and what works in different circuits.He also grades the tubes for noise and microphonics.
