I mainly listen to rock, then jazz then clasical a little bit.I am wodering if any felow rock enthusiast could give some advice. In my main He man system I am using a denon 103R which is pretty nice. In system "2 I am using a Blue Point clone (Maui)which is great, only had it for 2 weeks so far and everything sounds brilliant. (on denon dp1200)
I have a standard 103 still boxed to fill in after the 103r wears out. am wondering if I should sell the 103 to pay for a shibatta type retip on the 103r or look elsewhere.
I am using the Wand unipivot tonearm (made in NZ) on big Pioneer direct drive

Hi there
you seem to be doing all the right things already.i think a different is needed for folk, pop,
Rock (and blues), jazz. Classical. At minimum 2 cartridges are needed. For rock and blues
i find the mm cartridges to be much better than mc cartridges. The rare exception is the ubiquitous 103 . However the 103 does require a retip (mandatory) and a good step device. So a good mm will often trump the 103. For mm..For my listening biases, the choices at the top ( i own everything
I am recommending) include reconditioned grace ruby, reconditioned technics epc100,stanton 881, music maker, garrot optim-fgs. I am less enthusiastic about the clearaudio mm even though they do nothing wrong . I hqve not heard the top new mm from ortofon but i think they should be added to the list. Basically mm have a natural pacing that mc seem to struggle to get. The mc virtues (which are questionable) usually are not needed for rock and blues.
Why does the 103 need a re-tip? I have a Zu 103 and feel no need to have it re-tipped. I get no sibilance or tracking error with mine.
I have tried 3 different stylus mods . To my ears all are much better than the stock 103
with its horrible conical stylus. Sorry this is my opinion and most people who hqve moved to lc agree with me . More music and less noise... i think the $250 lc retip is the way to go with 103. The costlier mods are more refined but not necessarily better. If you like the stock 103 i think you will be in for a pleasant surprise. Van del hul wrote a good article on stylus in the groove. You should read it. He will explain it better than me. Meanwhile hearing is believing g.

I'm sure you are correct about this, and for this reason, I highly recommend the Audio Technica AT33EV . It is a better sounding cartridge than the DL-103R and it is less expensive than the price of a DL-103R plus a retip. I suspect it is also an excellent cartridge for rock.
Best regards,
John Elison
Are you after euphony or accuracy? If it is accuracy you are after then I wouldn't be going for a Shibata tip given the other better designs out there. Also, the alignment is absolutely critical - you have to trust the cut and mounting accuracy since you can't set SRA based on shank angle using the USB scope method. I would be going for a VdH type profile for maximum life and superior performance.
You have access to Garrott Bros in Melbourne so you could try one of their line contact options like the MicroScanner or MicroTracer.

Usually the Denon DL-103/103R are considered good rock/jazz cartridges. What exactly are you looking for that is different?
thanks, good to know- it might not be set up properly yet, Iam going to have a friend over soon to check it all
