If your amp does not have a phono stage, you will need a phono preamp. If your turntable has a preamp, you can plug it into an auxiliary port.

The amp does have a phono stage, but I want to replace it and hook up another one with the CDP for some time, leaving the TT on the rack. The second amp does not have a phono stage. To save my time and efforts, can I spin the TT to test the record without connecting it to the former amp with a phono stage? Is it safe for the TT?
It will not hurt the turntable or cartridge to play a record on it with the RCA jacks not hooked to a phono preamp. No damage will occur.
