I have an Andante P-76 with a stylus I don't trust. A couple years ago I came home and they stylus was rotated about 90 degrees. Either my 2 year old had something to do with it or a ghost. Anyway, I carefully rotated it back but haven't used it since. I should replace it, which is frustrating since it has less than 40 hours on it.
So anyway, I looked around and there aren't many options that I could find. See the link below for an example. That particular one is from a company named Tonar. I haven't heard of them before but found a thread on Audiokarma that talks about their pickering replacement. The folks on that thread suggested it was a rebranded JICO. So why would you buy the Tonar when you could buy the JICO? There is another company that sells a replacement made by a British company named Lumen.
So long question short, does anyone know a good source for an Andante P-76 replacement?
What about sound smith?
Is there any reason to believe this cart is worth the $250 SS option?
And in general, what are the good stylus companies out there. I know JICO and Pfansteihl. Is Tonar good? Lumen Who else?
Thanks!
Nate

stay away from Pfanstiel always. Your cart has a line contact stylus in it and those replacement ones you mentioned may not be that, probably are not. I saw sites that had a stylus they say fits the Andante (Sumiko) P-38 and P-76. The big difference in these two carts from what I remember was the stylus not the cart in that the P-38 had an elliptical and the P-76 had a line contact (Shibata?) stylus.
So in determining what you should do there are several factors. What TT is it connected to? It's a P-mount style cart. Is it a good TT that deserves a good cart/stylus? Do you have a good phono preamp. Do you love vinyl and have a good collection of records that you play often? All of these must be considered.
As to the SS option it is almost always the best option and that's why it costs more. I seldom if ever hear complaints from anyone that uses them.
My guess is ALL those replacement styli brands you mentioned are NOT like the original line contact.
Good luck

As far as the TT I just sold everything and bought a VPI Prime. I still have a couple things to sell and will hopefully break even so its not as wild abandoned as it might seem, at least that is what I am telling myself.
I have a Grado companion which is basically a Low output moving iron Grado Sonata Statement that is in a metal body rather than wood. I also have an ADC XLM II and a Denon 103R that is off to sound smith getting $250 LC stylus replacement. I referenced that one in the OP. I have this Andante that I really don't want to sell but also don't want to use as is. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!?!
As far as amps and phono pre's I am fairly well covered. I have a Parasound Halo P5 which has a very good phono section. I've read the MC headlamp isn't great but that is ok because I have a DIY Boozehound headamp which is outstanding. I also have a boozehound DIY phono amp and a hotrodded bugle. I could have better but I could do worse!
Thanks
Nate
