You can get the CineMag 3440s, etc, or any other transformers and do it in a project box - the wiring is very straightforward and easy, if maybe a bit precise with the tiny wires. The pre-built one in the Trader looks like a great deal.
There are other vintage units out there - by Denon, Ortofon, and AT, for starters - that are reliable and proven, and they're probably still in the $200-300 ballpark on ebay, et al.
I'm looking into my options as well, having an S5000 in the pipeline right now - my favorite is a DIY using Shure mic transformers that someone on eBay had a couple of years ago. ZERO noise, and the gain is sufficient to drive LOMCs up to the Sherwood's line level. I've used that and the 3440-based SUTs for a few years now into tube and SS preamps, and they sound great. I'm sure the 1131s would sound really good, too, but that's outside my budget for the time being (selling/buying a house and all that other good stuff).

Thanks,
I exchanged a few emails with David Geren this morning and I think I'm going to go with the 1254 blue transformers.
I think this will give me some headroom performance wise in the event I lose my mind and decide to spend way more money (more than a at33-ev) in the future on a cartridge. I'm assuming that one can DIY a SUT with the 1254 as well as the 3440a.
I guessing I will be able to get it done for $350ish.

Do you know the price of the CM-1254? I'm curious what CineMag charges for the raw transformer.
Thanks,

$175

The last pair I bought were 175 each (350 for a pair)
... I may be able to squeeze the piggy bank for a set. I don't mind their pedestrian origins.
Thanks for the heads-up, and good luck with your project!
in project design see Cinemag site diagrams. My SUT sounds fantastic. There is a presence that my head amps lack. Not detail, realism or black background, but a palpable sound stage.Cost is dependent on both the image of the box, and the quality of the interconnecting parts, such as switches, RCA's etc.Whether this makes a difference is debatable, but considering the level of signal I was willing to be fussy compared to connections within a power amp. I used good silver switches and rhodium plated RCA's. Probably overkill but I am happy.
Consider a ground lift switch as well as the level switch. I had much pain locating and removing hum without one as interconnects can pick up RFI.
Parts connection & Digikey are your friends in this process.
The customer is then charged what he is likely to stand. ...
