As noted above, the Ortofon headshells have longer slots so you can reach the Baerwald alignment point. A lot of the Japanese, (now Chinese) headshells tend to only allow enough length to reach Stevenson alignment. The Longer slots in the Jelco and Sumiko Headshells are a good option. Here is a link to a private label headshell for about $60.00 that is a copy or actually made as the Jelco HS25.

Scroll down this page until you come to the "Adjustable Azimuth" headshell for $55.00, which appears identical to the Jelco HS25 that sells for more.
The other option is to search the auction sites for one of the skeletal headshells that were mage by Adcom and the Audio Technica AT-D7.
To me, unless you are cash strapped, filing headshell slots is a bit Rube Goldberg, unless no headshell you can find is long enough.
The holy grail for you would be to locate a Pioneer PP-312 headshell, but there are pricey when they do occasionally come up for sale.

I emailed them to send me a paypal invoice. This looks like it may be just what I'm looking for.
Thanks.

Glad to share some of my experiences with headshells. Hope it works great for you. I got 2 of them back when they were $50.00 each and am very happy with them.
those shells look like and are probably made by jelco for sumiko (now very expensive) and what LPGEAR,COM is selling as the Zupreme. i have numerous ones of those including sumiko when they were $50.
they are truly made better and have azimuth adjustment and TWO retaining pins PLUS Litz stranded high quality connecting wires for the cartridge. the wires can be as high as $25 to $40 alone.
there are very few, if any shells that are superior.

The mounting slots don't seem longer than other head shells I have, including Technics, Sumikos and Nagaokas.
Opus 33 1/3
i had an orsonix shell of the skeleton type once. it ahd much less space to the rear and some carts couldn't be positioned far enough rearward to allow proper overhang to be achieved.
if you nee more adjustability, i say use a round file (to elongate the mounting holes) from a set of jeweler's files which you should be able to get at a good hobby store. there is a sufficient number of choices to use the correct one.

Thanks Tommy. I went ahead and bought the Jelco HS25 (or clone thereof) recommended above.

please report back in this thread for the end result. then i will be able to see the result when it occurs. thanx.

The new headshell has a good bit more room to get the overhang and alignment better tuned in.

Definitely a more rock solid center image by better overhang and alignment. The stock shell puts the furthermost of the two screws up against it's slot edge with a little left to be desired for proper Baerwald via my Geo-Disc.

Looks good Dave. How were your tonearm bearings when you got your PLX-1000, was there any amount of slack to them?
Mine are fine. Herb Reichert talked about adjusting them in last months Stereophile, I think it was, with strong warnings of exercising caution in doing so.

i once had to adjust the bearings on my grace 707 arm, not simple but doable. are the pio's bearings adjustable?

I had looked at the Ortofon specs., and if I recall, they didn't look any different than the Pioneer I have.

Another nail in the coffin of the latest SL-1200 knockoff, the Pioneer PLX-1000. Designed for todays hiphop DJ that doesn't place sound quality as a priority and cartridge alignment is low on the list of things to do. Get out the Dremmel tool, I woulodn't invest 10 cents in a headshell for the PLX-1000.
Threadcrap much?! Man you're like a broken record here as well as on Audiokarma! If the guy is asking about a turntable he's already bought, he doesn't need you telling him he bought junk.
I suggested the same as a couple other posters to get out the Dremel tool. The facts still stand re the PLX, designed for the hiphop DJ, made in Taiwan with Chinese parts, I didn't say it was junk, you did and I now have to agree with you, the PLX is Chinese junk.
they can be quite atractive

I agree. And it's far from junk, but I let his comments go.

Indeed. A vast majority of those I've seen posting online on several turntable related forums who's actually bought a PLX-1000 likes it a lot.
I usually ignore the trolls but this particular one seems to have made it his life's mission to jump into any thread anywhere online mentioning a Hanpin-related and complain about cheap Chinese knock-offs. It gets tedious!
Enjoy your PLX. I plan on picking one up next month.
