not for me but I've put off getting back into vinyl long enough so maybe I'll follow up myself. I got an email from a friend who mistakenly thinks I know anything about this. But I know who to ask! So, here's his note to me. Any recs? he's not a huge audio spender guy, so the setups with $5k cartridges etc.. But his daughters are a sister band and are putting out vinyl, so he has an incentive. (they are a great little punky alt teen show and getting better all the time. They draw good crowds here and are on the bill with other groups all over the west and further out).here's his note:
"I'm getting ready to buy a new turntable. I am sick and tired of having problems with my vintage/garage sale equipment.
I'm not going audiophile but I kind of know what I think I want . . . I like the Pro-ject Debut Carbon but I really need semi automatic because that is just the way I listen to music. I need it to turn off when I'm finished. I have visited the crazy guy at Turntables Unlimited and I really like the looks and price of the Marantz TT-42 ($329). They also have a Marantz SR4023 Receiver that I am also interested in but I also am interested in a receiver with Apple Play (I think thats what its called) .. . Anyway, I would be interested in any input you might provide."
Any ideas on where to point him will be appreciated by him and me!

or get the afore mentioned Denon, preferably one with a built in phono pre.
KISS is the way to go, if he wants to make it more complicated than that down
the line, well THEN you know where to ask, 'cause people around here can make
it plenty complicated!
i.e. "less than a grand", arm lifts and vintage recommendations when they are already ruled out.

If SC is the utmost importantance , I would stay away from the cheap DD Japanese tables , look for a used AR with upgrades, Thorens or an LP12 , all are accessible under 1K or there abouts ...
A.Wayne didn't you intend to say stay away from the new production cheap Chinese tables mfg by the Hanpin Turntable Factory for Audio Technica, Stanton, Denon, Teak, Pioneer etc.
@Majick47 , Yes ....
of course not available new anymore, but for under 500 you can pick one up on Craigslist in most metro areas. I am not familiar with the new tables you speak of, but I doubt they'd compete with a clean vintage technics.http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ele/5100939731.html

Cheaper here without cartridge !
Not many auto tables these days, but this might fit the bill !
Pioneer PLX-1000
I enjoy mine with a few added do-dads, but I don't see where a Q-up would fit on it. The OP wanted a semi-automatic, and the Q-up would get him as close to semi-automatic as possible with this manual table. That said, I recommend he forgoes all that semi-automatic stuff and gets a PLX-1000. Then order a Herbie's Way Excellent mat to start.
See ya. Dave

Not sure about semi-auto turntables but there is a product, Q-Up, that will lift the tonearm when it gets to the end of the record. It won't return the arm and shut down the TT but it will prevent the stylus from plowing into the inner groove. I think Music Direct has it, probably Elusive Disk as well - it's around $50 - $60.
The beauty here is that you can use any table you like, including the Project table you mentioned.
