I'll take this table, which I had seen posted on the Asylum Trader for $1,495...
And I'll put this cartridge on it ($589)...
So, I saved you $2,681.39. Don't say I've never done anything for you.

On Audiogon right now:
1) George Merrill selling an Heirloom without tonearm for $1800. Also a used Moerch UP-4 for sale under Tonearms (or a Helius Aurora on VinylEngine Adverts).
2) Used VPI Classic 2 with a 3D arm for $2395.
3) The Anvil Convertible would be a less conventional choice, but MF really liked it, and Bruce McDougall is (in the best way) obsessed with speed accuracy and stability of platter rotation.
Add cartridge of your choice, and enjoy.

Ame! my guess is this that this Is hard to beat at any price. The few tables that are convincingly better are all much
less practical. This set is really complete and even without the extra
arm wand does well on a wide variety of cartridges. I would pay 2500 for thos. 1400 for table and 1200 for arm. But it is really worth more because it is so convenient. Wish i had place for another
What percentage of this combo do you get from the 1200mk2? I realize the epa arm is much better. :-)
When I first heard LP reproduction as a child it was from a Garrard Model 98 idler wheel turntable.
I have owned a lot of different turntables in my life. Some sounded disappointing even with great reviews and customer approval ratings. Idlers have this way to communicating you are there. Even mediocre recordings sound better.
What differentiates idlers? It is the moment of inertia.
SP (Special Products) was a Technics division catering to the studio and mastering community. They built the SP-02 lathe motor for the Neumann record lathe that revolutionized the sonics of the best sounding LP's you will ever hear.
The SP 15 has the same moment of inertia as the SP 10MKII. This is quite a bit more than the SL1200. It is also a quieter turntable.
At the time the SP 10MKII was selling upwards of $3k with the Obsidian plinth. an EPA 100 tonearm and a decent cartridge. The SL1200 was selling for about $400.00 without a cartridge.
I have owned several SL1200 models and own a couple of SP 15 turntables. The SP 15's sound superior in bass response, dynamics, and maintaining the sound stage even under difficult auditory climaxes.
The SL1200 is portable, it is built like a tank, and it keeps time just as well as the SP 15 or 25 models. It is more obtainable and can still be found for a reasonable amount of money.
I love them both. If you are after world quality playback the SP 15 can give you more than a taste of the high end.
If you can get an SP 15 buy one. You need to make sure it maintains all three speeds. If not then wait for another to come up for sale.

Thanks, Tubesforever. I appreciate the information.
Appreciate the info from both you and Tubesforever. I'm not ready to pull the trigger at the moment, but really like the idea of being able to easily change out cartridges. I would like to have a dedicated mono cartridge in addition to being able to easily compare stereo cartridges. Unlike many here, I don't have much experience with different tt's or catridges.
...the SP-15 is fairly easy to come by ...they sold LOTS of them. If you look at FleaBay "completed sales" you will find motors from $300 - $500 and motors with Technics plinths for a bit more.
Take a look at the one in the link below. A motor, plinth, custom cover and blank armboard for under $600 ...and apparently from an established seller of Technics tables/parts.
The rare/expensive part is the EPA arm ...not the table.

...for two reasons:
1. I never had the same cartridge on them.
2. I listened to the SL-1015 exclusively on headphones for the last year and no longer have them.
Sorry I can't give you a direct answer ...I just never had the inclination to do a side-by-side to discern sonic differences.
In the context of my system, I am certain much of the SL-1015's potential went untapped, while the SL-1200 is a perfect fit. I can't imagine ever wanting to own a table that could better the SL-1015 and I see the SL-1200 as the point of diminishing returns ...at least in my world. Which I guess may sort of answer your question in a vague sort of way.
Have a Happy 4th.

I understand where you are coming from. Hope you enjoy your 4th as well.
1200.. top end of mid fi
1015.. middle of Hi fi.
For me ..i would not pay more than 450 for sl1200..but would pay 2000 for 1015..

Man, I wanted that damn thing.

It was a good-old-fashioned, pre-Internet type deal.
We spoke on the phone at length, he trusted me, sent a 2/3 deposit and then drove up from Virginia (I am in CT) a month later to pick it up. He didn't want to risk shipping it, which was fine by me.
He'd wanted one since they had first come out and the look on his face when he saw it was priceless.
Sorry it sold before you saw it. You weren't the only one ...I lost track, but think I could have sold 6 or 7 of them.
I'll look for more.
