Simple, musical and cheap system.

Well, maybe in terms of audiophile budgets but as for the mainstream public it is expensive. I also see issues with the rather low output at the RCA's on the Nomad (Output voltage (RCA): 287mV at 1kHz) and the Audioengines low input impedance of 10K. The Audioengine specs do not say what input voltage is required full output but I imagine its at least a half a volt to a volt. This means you'd likely need to buy a 1/4" stereo to two RCA cable and use the headphone out. That would be a little ugly due to the left front location and upward facing headphone jack. I called Audioengine and left a message as to sensitivity.E

I never look at the specs. I try a combo and if I like the sound I leave it at that. It sounds very good to my ears.

Oh cool, you have it and it works fine, good. The speakers have remote volume right> ? The site shows the remote but not up close to see what it does. Cheers!

Many at work sit at their desks with earbuds listing to whatever on their device of choice. A few have pedistrian level headphones. It would be a gas to bring in the Nomad and set it up on my desk next to the keyboard with some high end cans. If only for a day just to get some reactions as people walk by seeing an PL spinning. A few know I'm into audio and they would laugh. The rest would likely be in amazement.
I would never buy one just for this purpose but it is fun to imagine the reactions.

That would be a hoot - good idea :)
listening station.

While I'd like to see it I can't. A used (required for listening station since new vinyl are sealed) record store is very unlikely to plunk down a grand on a TT of any kind much less then let the public operate it. The average rig I've seen in visiting stores all across the nation is under $500 for TT,Amp and speakers. Sure there are exceptions.E

It would.

I understand the nomad has an riaa converter so you don't need a phono preamp, amd the speakers are powered so you don't need an amp, but don't you still need a pre or a passive?
The A5 speakers have a volume control on the powered speaker. The volume control on the Nomad doesn't control the line out.

That's pretty lame.
Makes using powered speakers attached to the line out a real pain to use unless they are sitting at arms length.
That said, if I had one as an office system I'd mostly use cans.
the powered speakers come with a remote

They do? I bought mine used and there was no remote. I pulled up the owners manual and it makes no mention of a remote. I'll have to contact them.
-Wendell
Just did a quick listen with the Nomad connected via the headphone output. Works fine. Can't yet speak to how it compares to the line out.

Ah 5 v 5+ same speaker though and they do sound good I've heard them.

I could if I connected through the headphone output of the Nomad. I'll have to try that and listen for any compromise in the sound.
-Wendell
Guys the A5's have a remote for volume and other things too.

The volume control!
Long time no see on these pages. How goes it?
Ingenious. Hanging in. Thanks for asking.
not needed for line level sources. You would normally need a phono preamp with a self powered speaker, but the VPI Nomad provides that. Pretty neat combination.
