I always wondered about the quality of those readers' digest box sets and never dared to buy one.
OTOH I've heard that Franklin Mints box sets are pretty good, and the brown vinyl makes for a pretty vintage look :-) Sadly they are hard to come by in my area (like everything else - it's a long way north...)

Grab the Franklin Mint records if you see them. You get great performance and great sound! You can't lose!

Haven't tried any FM boxes.
A few things to watch for with the RD boxes include being careful to get stereo boxes. Check the condition of EVERY record. A spot check may not identify problems with one that would end up being your favorite.
The Beethoven and Rachmaninoff boxes are in HIGH DEMAND for a reason.
The early boxes are exquisite in terms of both the quality of the recording and [almost all of] the performances.
Early pressings are almost ALWAYS better than later ones.
I'm sure there are a LOT of other comments on Reader's Digest boxes in other threads.
