I purchased a slightly used VPI Traveler turntable. I had the original model a few years ago, this one is the version 2. I raved on about this turntable . How the build quality was top notch and it sounded wonderful for a mid level turntable. Well, the lure of vintage TT's was to much so I sold it. I have three vintage turntables now. Between the three they are keeping me busy, replacing belts, adjusting suspension, replacing internal tonearm wire, fixing switches, you name it. I wanted to go back to the old days of just playing records. There are no upgrades for this table so I should be safe.....

You didn't go for the Pioneer PLX-1000. One review said "We compared the PLX-1000 with a belt-drive VPI Traveler turntable; that one's bass sounded a little soggy and bloated next to the PLX-1000's tighter low-end. Frankly, I was surprised; VPI sounded so lackluster, the PLX-1000 had more get up and go. Wow, the direct-drive beat out the belt-drive; it was no contest!"
I bought one. Put anOrtofon MC3 Turbo in a Project Carbon headshell and played music.
Shocking. My AR-XA(vintage rebuild), and my Rega RP-3with TT/PSU are simply outclassed.
Outclassed to a degree I did not think possible.
So the bottom line is what sounds better?

arm wands, SDS or other PSU (Phoenix Eagle?)

You may be thinking of the Scout. The traveler has a gimbaled arm. No arm wand changes.....
Just like the JMW arms on the Scout.
