Just sat down and finally gave it a listen.
If you're looking for "ecstasy" or "transcendence" forget it. Solti's got things to do and places to go; and the parking meter's running.
That said, gotta give the engineers a hand for capturing the cosmic, massive organ/bass drum/gong dominant (fifth) chord right before the whole piece wraps up; they really do justice to Mahler's dramatic moment. The sound really opens up at that moment. Too bad there's only a couple of minutes left though!
Still, I wouldn't want to be without Tennstedt (digital!) and Morris (warts and all) for a more lasting high.

Agree - and the entire opening of the second movement is also a great showcase for what a great audio system can do. One of the LPs I have used the most for that purpose, especially for my fellow musicians.
My thoughts exactly about the last dominant.

The choir ends on the tonic, and everything is built over the tonic, which serves as the pedal note until the very end.
Thank Darwin Rick W did correct me before I caught my mistake!
