Your best bet is to look on Craigslist, find an old belt drive Japanese, ask to hear it working. For $100 don't expect too much, but if it works, later on if your son is not into vinyl you could probably get your money out of it.I see Old belt drives in working condition quite often on Portland, Or. Craigslist. (They do sell quickly.)

I've been reading that vinyl is replacing CDs. I'm starting to believe it with these prices.
It can take weeks and weeks to find a decent cheap turntable, especially in Portland. Everybody wants in on vinyl, and most of the turntables for sale are those cheap plastic USB ones. It takes patience.

I've gotten some decent tables on CL over the last year or so for less than $50. A Dual w/ a Micro Acoustics MA-2002 for $25, A Technics DD linear tracker - I needed something small footprint, a B&O 3404, A Yamaha DD for $10 w/ a spare Stanton 681EEE I sold on the bay for $125. A console w/ a nice Garrad Lab 80 for free.
CL is the place for the mid fi TT bargain. You just have to look every day. Eventually you'll find one.
