So my 12 year old just saw a turntable in person for the first timne in a novelty store at the mall. It was one of those awful USB Crosley jobs and not even plugged in, but he is intrigued and wants to hear records.
I want to get something that is not a total piece of junk. Forget anything USB, but not really expensive either. Like under $100. I'm guessing he will lose interest after realizing that he can't connect his IPod to it, but he is starting out on the Sax so maybe he'll hear sounds that his IPod can't reproduce and wantr a better one later.
I have a mid 90s Pioneer amplifier that is heavyish. It has a phono input. Probably not great, but workable.
Follow Ups:
I have a Music Hall with a Goldring cartridge. It has about 10 hours on it and has been sitting unused for over 10 years. It is in like new condition and if memory serves it has decent sound. If you are interested let me know and I'll snap some pictures. $100.00 plus shipping.
For this market I don't believe a specific model can be recommended. It all comes down to condition. That is assuming manufacturer was a major brand, which would not include Crosley. I've found good working condition tables for friends at garage sales for as little as $15.

Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, Technics, Sansui, Yamaha, blah, blah, blah ...it really doesn't matter. At under $100, just get one that works well, which many of them will.

AudioTechnica has an approx. 100 dollar turntable
Sorry but that one is junk

That's what 100 dollars gets you.
Yes in the new market which is why he should go used. It is a total POS.

What the op wants starts at 500 dollars for anything decent used. That's the way of life.
Oh, I thought he said cheap, I missed that. No wait he said this in his original post: " Like under $100. "
I worked on one of those AT's which is why I know how bad it is. No tonearm adjustments including tracking force.

As suggested check your local Craigslist for a vintage Japanese table, either belt or direct drive for under $100 and probably well under $100. If the kid looses interest you should be able to get all your money back. You will loose most of your money on a new table, just about all of the new ones in this price range and higher aren't much better than toys for a 5yo.
Your best bet is to look on Craigslist, find an old belt drive Japanese, ask to hear it working. For $100 don't expect too much, but if it works, later on if your son is not into vinyl you could probably get your money out of it.I see Old belt drives in working condition quite often on Portland, Or. Craigslist. (They do sell quickly.)

I've been reading that vinyl is replacing CDs. I'm starting to believe it with these prices.
It can take weeks and weeks to find a decent cheap turntable, especially in Portland. Everybody wants in on vinyl, and most of the turntables for sale are those cheap plastic USB ones. It takes patience.

I've gotten some decent tables on CL over the last year or so for less than $50. A Dual w/ a Micro Acoustics MA-2002 for $25, A Technics DD linear tracker - I needed something small footprint, a B&O 3404, A Yamaha DD for $10 w/ a spare Stanton 681EEE I sold on the bay for $125. A console w/ a nice Garrad Lab 80 for free.
CL is the place for the mid fi TT bargain. You just have to look every day. Eventually you'll find one.

I picked up a Project - a bit more than $100, but there are lots to choose from...

Got a Technics SL-2 not QL-2, AT cart. My friend found about 100 plus LP's in his closet, not played for over 20 yrs. OK condition.
Cost about $12, no shipping since I met the person locally. In front of Brooks Berdan, intentionally. Brought it into the store, hooked it up, even cart was good.
I would look on ebay.
