Back in the 1970s when I had one of these new, that overhang checker got me in the ball park for mounting the cartridge. Seemed to work just fine, but that was the 1970s, I was still in college, and the Pioneer was my first decent turntable. I'm not sure anyone used a protractor then, either, certainly not among any of my acquaintances. (I used a Shure M91ED cartridge--they were everywhere then. Not expensive for the time, and a terrific tracker.)
My experience exactly. I remember the arm was able to use an m91ed near the low end of it's vtf range without audible mistracking.
If the overhang checker was a finer line and a longer arc, it could be quite effective, I think. Not a bad idea.
My dim recollection was that the overhang gauge worked OK. Of course, way back then setting up a cartridge for me was affixing the cartridge to the head shell, connecting the leads, and a quick run at a protractor and then let it rip! Ah, the good old days.

I call it the "hangover checker" haha. I prefer my protractor...
I found out phono signals are finicky, you need a good shielded cable or it will pick up hum.
