Greetings,
I was looking into getting a speed control for my VPI HW-19. The prices on commercial units seem prohibitively expensive. I was looking at the Gallo project in issue One/1986 of Audio Amateur. Gallo projects were always superb, however, some of the parts may be difficult to source or obsolete now. Is there anything better in the current DIY arena that would work in the manner of the Falcon PSU/Phoenix Road runner units?
Thanks for your input.

....not only a lower cost, but the satisfaction of building things for myself, which I've done for years.
My first "kit" was a hafler DH-200 & DH-110; since then I've done more DIY stuff than the commercial "kit".
A LOT more bang for the buck than some retail dreck. And I know how it was built, which says a lot about quality and reliability.
I heard about this speed control design many years ago, but haven't had access to the article. I too own a HW-19 -- simple thing should last forever.
Many thanks for all of the input.
IF I decide to pursue this I think I will go with the Gallo speed control. The chips are all still available, as is the modular amplifier. The exact toroidal's aren't but they are just transformers, common voltages at that.
It looks simple, I may check with Gallo.
Perhaps an update for an Audioexpress article?
I think we all agree that certainly would be helpful to the present publication slump that periodical has been in since Dell's leadership left. I'm not being mean or unreasonably critical ... it's just that ... well ... look back through Audio Amateur issues... What a truly superb DIY audio magazine that was!!
Hi Bob, There is a VPI SDS for $450 here on Audio Asylum.
I think the OP is looking for a lower cost solution than that.
Besides, why would someone pay $450 for a 20 year old design when you can buy state of the art for $379 and get the additional features of the Falcon?
Hi Bob,
Do you require a fully closed loop solution or are you willing to manually set speed with a strobe disc?
If you can be content with manual control, I can suggest a "Red Neck" speed box arangement which you can easily put together with stuff you can get from eBay for about $100.

some of the semiconductors can be cross referenced and there are people who have stock of old chips.
