Hi
I just bought a V15 Type V body off ebay which comes without stylus...
I notice that JICO have two options for the VN5MR, the "ordinary" replacement at USD150 quotes a "microridge" tip, and of course the SAS variant which is labelled "high grade type".
Has anyone bought the 'ordinary' one? Is it ACTUALLY a microridge tip, in which case, what is the difference between the two given that the SAS tip is well known to be virtually identical if not IDENTICAL to the microline and I was of the understanding that the microridge was just another name for the microline....
There's only USD17 difference between the two and the pictures look remarkably similar!
Thanks!

VN5MR SAS "OHTOU'
"Sweet Cherry, called "Sakuranbo" is also known in Japan as "Yusuraume". However, the naming of this lush pink has it's origin in the arcadian image of peach and cherry blossoms at the peak of their beauty. As the poet Touenmei writes in "The Origin of the Peach Blossom", Eden is not to be found on earth but is a place that dwells in the depths of the spirit. Naturally it is the same with sound, for no two people experience it in the same way. Beauty is most certainly in the ear of the beholder."

..but it looks so beautiful, why would I want to take it out of the packaging and "use" it! ;)
Joking aside, I wonder if these are hand selected to meet finer tolerances in alignment?

They used to make a beautiful vermillion red AKAZONE stylus assy for my Jico SAS-1 cartridge but I recall they claimed it to be a normal SAS just painted with lacquer.
In fact on the web site they claim:
"The specifications of the URUSHI series are same as that of our normal styli. There is no technical difference."
and it seems like a step up from the standard SAS. Dunno for sure tho. More carefully done perhaps??

And do we know if the compliance changes with the SAS stylus?
It is WAY better in every respect except it can tend to be a little "bright" on some recordings. Bass, dynamic contrasts, detail - all considerably better. It does seem to be a bit different compliance-wise as - on my SME-IV the resonant frequency is about 7-hz. Presents no problems with woofer pumping or anything else. It is a fair bit higher in gain as well - not especially welcome.
On the Telarc Firebird you'd better start out at modest volume because the crescendi will blow you away otherwise.

I would prefer a higher compliance out of the Shure V15 VxMR for use with the Rega 303 at 11.5 grams effective mass (estimated).
SME Series II Improved is a very light arm (9 grams effective mass?) a perfect match, I suspect, for the V15 VxMR
is 11 gms. So - I am confused

Apparently the VN5MR and the SAS version BOTH have the SAS tip. The SAS labelled "high grade version" has an additional tie wire.
I guess for only USD17 more, it is a bit of no brainer to go the SAS route.

What is the purpose of the additional tie wire?
The actual marketing blurb (according to a search result I checked) is (according to JICO) that "The SAS (High Grade) adds our one-point tension wire to enable better transmission of information from the record groove to the moving magnet." In other words, how the cantilever is attached/mounted.
Basically, the tie-wire helps to maintain a consistent position for the cantilever when deflected ie it provides a restoring force relative to the VTF. In other words it influences the compliance of the suspension. Without it, they would be relying on the effect of a rubber doughnut or similar and the cantilever position will be much more dependent on VTF.
Given the price difference is so small, I think it is a no-brainer to go for the SAS version given that everything else is the same. In my experience with Pickering and Stanton styli, the tie-wire makes a huge difference to tracking ability. Generic replacements which don't use the tie-wire are pretty awful...

Best tracker I've managed to find, including the stock Shure V15 VxMRWas very lucky to get an extra stylus from Shure before they stopped making them. That said, I no longer use the Thornes 125 with an SME series II improved arm which has got to be the ideal match for that cartridge, so it sits.
I think the JICO MM-1 with the SAS stylus is a better cartridge while a bit less compliant, or so I'm told.
Seems a good enough match for the Rega 303 arm to be my go-to MM cartridge for now.
