Apparently the sound isn't worthy of its price.

I have been using one for the last 2 years for archival work. My version still requires a phono stage so I can still use my reference stage so I can give a reasonably accurate description of how it compares to my mechanical system through said phono stage.
What you have to remember is that you don't have the problem with mechanical interactions such as tracking error, LF rumble, SRA issues etc. In other words, it will sound quite different to what the reviewer may be used to with his mechanical system. However, I would agree that the sound is not SOTA by any stretch of the imagination since there is still the matter relating to the quality of the analogue output stage. Even with totally clean discs, you will get considerably higher levels of background ticks which will also affect your perception.
I knew this before I bought it having read about the original Finial player in 1989 and was not expecting a "reference" grade result. I bought it because I specifically need it for vintage material and questionable discs (and even one disc which is in two pieces after a shipping disaster). However, when the recordings are cleaned up, they do sound "almost" as good as my mechanical system with classical and jazz material.
What I'm trying to say is you would never choose to buy the ELP as your primary vinyl spinner. It is a tool for which you have to have a need for. It is for playing discs that a mechanical system will either be unable to or you may risk destroying a stylus in so doing!! For worn discs it tracks on (potentially) virgin areas of the groove so can sound better than any mechanical system.

I admire you for your persistence, but it never seems to soak into the thick skulls of those who consistently make the rest of us do extra work because they so inconsiderately refuse to utilize the "URL Box." However, keep up the good work! I appreciate your effort. Thanks,
