  Most perfect balance of "rigor" and grandeur in the Finale I've ever heard, and the Scherzo (usually when I surf the web) is superhumanly played. Not a Toscanini fanboy, but his this and his Debussy La Mer are ones for the ages.
  
  The organ sound is embarrassing though.

    The Telarc is amazing and the organ won't let you get bored.

      My first exposure to the Organ Symphony was Ormandy's on Columbia, because the conductor was my parents' most "trusted" guy in such material, back in the 70's. (One only listened to the European guys if one wanted ultra-quiet vinyl.)

      I remember gasping --Niles style-- when I saw that Telarc had landed the Philadelphia Orchestra and made a new recording. Saved my pennies and I remember cracking the Lp open in the car an marveling over the grooves on the way home. (I could make out the very moment where the organ comes in during the second half.)

      I listened to the piece so much back then... I know where all the audible page turns are. If I dare say, the church is a bit too much of a muddy acoustic to really register Saint Saens more astringent writing such as the quicksilver Scherzo. The the Philly "sound" isn't always appropriate.

      Without minimizing Saint Saens' incredible accomplishment and scorching inspiration--maintained at the highest levels right to the last note--the big moments and the organ part don't really get to me like they used to, and from that POV, Toscanini's attention to detail and overall architecture is refreshing.

      The only one that comes close for me--and good news for sound nuts--is Paray's on Mercury.

  The only version I have of this is the Telarc LP from around 1980 (cat #, Stereo 10051) with Michael Murray on organ and Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra...
  
  A "room rumbler" to say the least. The performance of both organ and orchestra keeps my attention, so I suppose that is a good thing!

    This Telarc is actually my standard for comparison with the others so you're in great shape with the Telarc.

  I have the stereo of that (BB) as well as the Munsch and a few others. My favorite by far is Dutoit/MSO on London digital. I love Blue Backs in general.

  Surely, for a spectacular orchestral piece, you would want the stereo - which is London CS6331 for the Ansermet, or Decca SXL6027.

  Have that on London CD reissue, and a German Decca press stereo LP. I agree with you, organ very deep also.
