I had the 8002 with the MMC2 cartridge (shabata cut with sapphire cantilever). I was absolutely floored when I got my VPI Scout with a Benz Ace LOMC, never looked back.
I'm not sure if it was an 80's versus 2000's technology thing or a mass thing but the VPI made the B&O sound like a child's record player.

You might like the MMC2 a lot better on the VPI! (Too late, I would expect.)

stop fucking around and just save up my pennies for a VPI...right? This is what I'm doing, but every time I see a nice working table for $20 bucks like that Denon I got the other day, I find it hard to leave it on the shelf to gather dust.
I have a Denon DP-1200 (among other tables) so I know what you are talking about. I wouldn't say don't buy the bargains. I would say stay away from the ones that are not really much of a bargain. With the high cost of the cartridge for the B&O and the questionable state of repair, I don't think that one is much of a bargain. I work with vintage turntables and they can require a lot of work, like a complete recap. If you can't do it yourself, it costs a fortune.
