...is good for the soul, so they say.
I caught my Ortofon 2M Black on the Onzow Zerodust today when removing it today. I had other things on my mind and didn't pull it back level on the table, I guess.
Bent the shit out of the cantilver. Easy enough to remove with the Ortofon series, you just pull off the front hood piece. However, an new stylus replacement is $579(assuming I didn't somehow damage the generator), and a new cart a good bit more. This one only had about 750 hrs. on it.
Put my 2M Bronze back on the arm. It has another 400 sides before it reaches the 1,000 hr. mark. It too sounds great; a tad leaner than the Black but plenty sweet.
I haven't screwed one up like this since the 70's. I'm taking it fairly well, but still a bit miffed.

...stick with the 2M Black and an authorized seller (thank you NeedleDoctor). I don't have the time or money to try a number of other cartridges right now (thank you Kitchen remodel), and I really miss the Black after a few days with the Bronze. On this setup, the Black is a "don't even think about the sound" kind of thing, as it just sounds natural across the board. The Bronze is very good, but the Black is better. I do find it interesting that it's just the difference between the Fine Line Contact and the Shibata styli that floats my boat, as the rest is the same between the two carts.

Put the new stylus on the old Black Body, quick alignment with the GeoDisc, and I'm back in business.
It didn't take but a couple of minutes to confirm I had the natural sound back that I've missed since I trashed the old cantalever. The Bronze is a nice facsimile, but the Black takes me away from critical listening. I find it interesting how different they sound with only the stylus profile being changed.
By the way, Ortofon did confirm for me that the body on the Bronze and Black are exactly the same.

I think you did the right thing.
I have the 2M Bronze, If It wears out or I have the same misfortune, I intend to upgrade it with a 2M black stylus.
About 6 years ago I trashed 2 expensive MC cartridges in one day, and I wasn't drinking! But that was the first time and hopefully the last. A very expensive lesson. I am especially careful with cartridges with ruby/sapphire cantilevers.

I trashed a V15 Mk III once, still cringe when I think about it .
Nice to read your feedback about the Bronze-I'm running the Blue right now but considering moving up the 2m line.
I like the Bronze, but already miss the Black. More "meat on the bone" with Black, especially through the midrange. The Bronze is as detailed as the Black, but a little leaner sounding. That said, the Bronze is a hell of a value.

My first DL-103 was my last victim. Did the whole nude thing, with the brass top plate with no issues. Spent a good 1-2 hours getting it really well set up and then in a move of sheer brilliance, managed to catch the stylus/cantilever on my sleeve. Tired, not paying attention, getting old - pick the excuse, but it broke my heart.
I am more careful now - you have my sympathies.
...how the 2M Black compares to a similarly priced Nagaoka mm cartridge. No way for me to know, but I've a hunch that the aforementioned Ortofon may get some considerable competition from that Japanese manufacturer.

At least in the 70's, you had an excuse. :^)
....I blame everything on age (I'm just barely sub-60)!

For the price of a new 2M stylus, you could buy this Denon 103 and get a line contact retip. No affiliation....

Now would be a good time for me to check out MC's. I haven't had one in decades. Without looking into it, I suspect I'd need a stepup for my Parasound P7 MC section if I went LO.

to mount the Bronze stylus assembly on the Black body? I am thinking probably not, because the difference between the two is probably related to the cantilever/stylus rather than to any difference between the Bronze body and the Black body. But still….
I believe the Bronze and Black motors are the same and the difference is the stylus. I could mount a Black stylus on the Bronze if somehow the Black generator was damaged, though I suspect it wasn't. The headshell/stylus assembly slips into a fairly stout rectangular insert underneath the headshell.

I started out thinking you had destroyed the cantilever/stylus on your Black, so I guess this could only pertain if you buy a new oem Black stylus assembly. In that case, it probably would make more sense to use it on the Black body. Yes?
getting up there.

probably why I haven't jumped off the roof about it all. ;-)

I appreciate it.

William Thakker has them for $411.00 or $439 depending on the Ebay link, do an Ebay search, my Laptop copy and paste isn't functioning.....

I emailed Thacker to find out if there are any other costs to California (import duties, customs, etc.) involved other than the free shipping $439 price shown for a new stylus. Their response to me was "I hope you understand, but it is impossible for me know".
I'd have thought they'd know after shipping so many over the years.
Anyone know how this works out?

No big loss there.

Too bad Ortofon doesn't give their customers a break on the stylus. It's one of the worst pricing structures IMO.
I once talked my brother into letting me borrow his ~$250 cartridge and I dropped it. Had to order a replacement ASAP and I never told him about it.
