I`ve also had very good experience with Cork mat with a mix of rubber in it. I bougth mine on ebay. co.uk.
Also very nice is the Achromat. I can`decide wich is best....
I have experimentet with a two layer mats: a thin acryl mat with the Cork mat on top wich also worked nice.
And a thin nephrene mat in the bottom and a 5mm acryl mat om top. This combination I currently use on one of my 1210`s instead of the original rubbermat.

made from various materials, and settled on this cork mat I had picked up on ebay. It was the only one I tried that was made from cork. I've had no desire to upgrade.
It's a nice fit on my Sony 555ES.
so is foam
so is rubber
so is solid machined graphite
so is leather
so is felt
so is........etc.
Some of the above materials may solve one problem while creating another. Such as static. IMHO felt and foam mats often will be prone to the production of static electricity while the record is being played. Graphite too.
And this static condition may be more apparent on some systems than others.....so the experience varies.
Rubber and cork seem to suffer less from static but are not immune from it.
Lets not for get the Merrill lead mat.
Shindo produced a leaded cloth mat for a time. I don't know if these are still available new.
