...the 1959 sessions apparently produced SXL2125-7, which were good stereo recordings. I don't see why they would re-record such a small-selling record when they had a good recording with the same artists already. It's not like Munchinger had gone HIP.
Follow Ups:
I'd agree with vinyl phanatic, he might think that he's got a better group. One eBay seller posted a sheet containing the list of soloists.
I can only guess that when they issued the Stereo Treasury set in 1977, they used the recording from 1972, since it was the more recent recording. ALC777 is correct, there was no Stereo Treasury issue of the 1958 recordings (which were issued in 1959). It would be interesting to compare the two recordings. They were 14 years apart, so it is entirely possible that Munchinger might have had different ideas, or perhaps thought that the group had gotten better. As far as being a good seller, the 1959 issue stayed in the London catalogue for a long time, at least up into the 70's, and it's not particularly hard to find, so it must have sold pretty well.

Will try to find the 1959 to compare to the 1972 recording, which I like very much. Appreciate the clarification.
Thanks,
