I had gone out today, and in search for something other than mdf or plywood for the turntable shelf. I found these panels of edge-glued 3/4"-thick strips of aspen. The attached link below tells all about the characteristics of aspen. I also got a 1 x 2" of clear pine, for bracing.
I know nothing of aspen's aural qualities, whether good or bad. In addition to the vinyl tile on top, and as an inert and non-interactive surface, I might also apply cork sheeting on the bottom, and with a spray adhesive, if recommended.
Pros?
Cons?

The brackets are now installed above the computer/audio desk. The brackets are from Home Depot, branded "EVERBILT MAGNUM", and rated up to 250 lbs. They jut out 12", therefore clear pine rails will need to be attached to the tops to extend the length to approximately 15". They're fairly level, but once said rails are attached the levelling should improve. Spacers made from composite "wood" flooring prevent the rear of the brackets from digging into the wallboard, thereby eliminating distortion of the brackets.I wanted the shelf centered over the desk, the monitor specifically, but the wall studs refused to cooperate.

Being that it is a soft wood it may not be your best choice for a tt shelf.
Quote from Wikipedia:
"Aspen wood is white and soft, but fairly strong, and has low flammability. It has a number of uses, notably for making matches and paper where its low flammability makes it safer to use than most other woods. Shredded aspen wood is used for packing and stuffing, sometimes called excelsior (wood wool). It is also a popular animal bedding, since it lacks the phenols associated with pine and juniper, which are thought to cause respiratory system ailments in some animals. Heat-treated aspen is a popular material for the interiors of a sauna. While standing trees sometimes tend to rot from the heart outward, the dry timber weathers very well, becoming silvery-grey and resistant to rotting and warping, and has traditionally been used for rural construction in the northwestern regions of Russia (especially for roofing, in the form of thin slats)."
The panel is of edge-glued strips of aspen, not a solid board thereof, and as a butcher's block. Also, the term "wood wool" might lead one to suspect an anti-resonant quality, hopefully. Once the shelf is cut out to shape and size, 1 x 2" strips of clear pine will be edge-glued and screwed to the underside, along the width, and perpendicular to the strips of aspen.
I just now weighed the turntable on my SECA physician's scale: 12 lbs.
The shelf as described will be more than adequate.

glue 1.5" braces to the underside about 12" or less apart. it probably means one in the back and front and center

Yes, for which the 1 x 2" of clear pine is intended. I was planning on every four inches, perhaps, and perpendicular to the direction of the edge-glued strips within the panel. Photographs will be forthcoming.
I do like the aspen. It's lightweight, and its other characteristics seem to greatly exceed those of the mdf for this project.
