Came across something I totally forgot I had - an Ortofon MCA-76 pre-preamp. Back In the day, this was a hot ticket for use with LOMCs made by Ortofon and others. Plugged it in and found no front panel light and no right channel output. not too surprising, as I havent used it in at least 10 years. I have no need for it as I have LOMC capability already. Can anyone advise whether it's worth a trip to the tech to repair for later sale? TIA, zach

This unit is designed for VERY LOMC, 0.07mV output of the MC-20 was the design value. So it has 34dB of gain or so. Way more than many phono preamps have for LOMC, usually about 20dB, to handle the 0.2-0.5mV output. This limits the usefulness of this unit, which I have owned again with an MC-20 cartridge.
I recapped a friend's MCA-76 a couple years ago, not too many caps but they were the Frako caps that do go bad. Might be as simple as recapping to make it work, but it would need to see a tech.
These units do bring some coin on the bay and there are plenty of DIY guys that might want to try fixing this one. Put a low fair price on it and float it in the bay or get it fixed and sell it for what they usually sell for on the bay or elsewhere.
I used it with a Shelter 90x, which was quite low in output. Worked fine. I tried it out with my current cart, the AT ART7, and it was the right gain…for one channel only. I'll probably put it on the 'bay for small change, $50 or so.

I used one of these for a few years, not a bad step up device. There are pics of the schematic through Google. If I had it, I would open it up and look for obvious faults, cold solder joints, leaking caps in the power supply, etc. Too bad you aren't in Portland, Or. there is a gentleman who could more than likely fix it for not a lot of money, especially since the schematic is available.
In any case, I wouldn't throw it away, sell it for cheap and let the next owner resurrect it.

I seriously doubt it would be worth paying a technician to fix. If you know how to fix it yourself, you could list it on eBay and hope for the best. That thing is very old and I'm sure its performance is seriously degraded due to age. The MCA-76 was my first moving coil pre-preamplifier back in 1976 at the time when I switched from moving magnet to moving coil cartridges. I bought it with an Ortofon MC-20, I believe.
Good luck,

John,
I have 10 thumbs and wouldn't trust myself to avoid burning the house down should I try to use a soldering iron. Junque, I'm afraid.
