I have an rb300 and an SME 309 and it is not a contest. The SME smokes the rb300 but, the rb300 is good for the money IMO.
On the other hand, if I ever felt the need for a Rega tonearm, I would buy an AudioMods tonearm instead of the RB300.

It's the ownership experience where the extra funds are really applied.
The Mitsubishi FQ400 is as fast as a Lambo Murcialago, but the two are worlds apart in other areas.
I have owned an RB-300 and an SME Series IV+ (added the fluid damping trough - almost a V). Both performed very well, but the SME was a joy to look at, operate and adjust. The RB-300 was sheer great value.
So it's not form, it's not function, it's simply pride of ownership?
Not entirely, but the difference in cost is largely offset by pride of ownership, because an SME V does not allow the cartridge to track that many times better than the RB300 does.

Somehow, I knew that's why you were axeing!
..it's such a delight to work with. That sublime engineering isn't just for show. OK, no azimuth adjustment but I can live with that given the ease and accuracy of the settings that can be optimised.
