Can anybody supply pdf files of, or point to a URL of the complete article? I think Alvin Gold was the author. I have the first two pages only.
Thanks!

Funny how it seems some were worried that Rega was gonna win.
What's actually interesting is to see comparisons between the better SME arms and arms like the RB1000 or the Aro or the Artimez or Origin Live products.

I did a quick search on "SME" + "ARO" and came up with the list below. I think if you look you'll be able to find people sharing their experience comparing the Artemiz with RB1000 with the Aro as well as the SME V. I wimped out and went with an Origin Live Encounter arm - someday I might step up to an Artemiz or the TOL Rega.

So, the Rega tonearm is STILL a great deal!
I've been focusing on turntables so much more than tone arms lately, mostly because I CAN'T imagine dropping $5K on a tonearm nor on a cartridge.
Damn! Even spell checker doesn't focus on tonearms any longer!
When I Googled "tonearms" at work, sites were blocked. The reason? Weaponry.
If I had a tonearm of sufficient strength, dare I say it? I could rule the world.
Not hard set...but assume that the hard value of anything that you end up buying is about 1/4 or 1/3 of what you paid for it. the rest is the toll takers fees along the way to your doorsteps. If you would sell what you make you would have to set the MSRP for 3 to 4 times what it cost you to make it in packaging, overhead, time and materials to stay in business. If you look at something as complicated as a turntable or a tonearm , unless you are looking at real cheap ass or real mass market implementations, the 4 to 5K range is not that outrageous for well engineered and quality made item.

I was going to post to say I scanned and uploaded the review as jpgs a while back, but 1973shovel beat me to it.

But I have all three pages in .jpg format, if you're interested. Contact me via Asylum mail.
Which tonearm came out on top in the comparison?
Here's most of the synopsis from page #3. I had to expand it, so it's a bit blurry, but hopefully you'll be able to read it.
Who can go against tonal colours hey?
I have an rb300 and an SME 309 and it is not a contest. The SME smokes the rb300 but, the rb300 is good for the money IMO.
On the other hand, if I ever felt the need for a Rega tonearm, I would buy an AudioMods tonearm instead of the RB300.
AudioMods Tonearm
It's the ownership experience where the extra funds are really applied.
The Mitsubishi FQ400 is as fast as a Lambo Murcialago, but the two are worlds apart in other areas.
I have owned an RB-300 and an SME Series IV+ (added the fluid damping trough - almost a V). Both performed very well, but the SME was a joy to look at, operate and adjust. The RB-300 was sheer great value.
So it's not form, it's not function, it's simply pride of ownership?
Not entirely, but the difference in cost is largely offset by pride of ownership, because an SME V does not allow the cartridge to track that many times better than the RB300 does.

Somehow, I knew that's why you were axeing!
..it's such a delight to work with. That sublime engineering isn't just for show. OK, no azimuth adjustment but I can live with that given the ease and accuracy of the settings that can be optimised.
