In Reply to: RE: Anyone else with plosive problems on the new Beach Boys stereo reissues? posted by SgreenP@MSN.com on January 29, 2015 at 09:00:55
I have original Capitols, don't recall this issue on the original pressings.

that Kevin would have heard the problem along the way?
I have the stereo remix of Pet Sounds done by mark linett in 1999 (Capitol), and it's fabulous. for whatever reason, that particular release went out of print in short order. the credits for this 'new' stereo version of Pet also list mark linett on the team, along with kevin, so i wonder what's been changed (if anything) this time around.
I might be able to improve the other two reissues by turning the subwoofers off when I play them. Hope so because other than the plosive issue they also have excellent sonics.
By the way, who sings the line "Don't be afraid to try the greatest sport around" in "Catch a Wave?" Is it Dennis Wilson or Al Jardine?

According to The American Federation of Musicians contract sheets for the dates July 14, and July 16, 1963, Catch a Wave was recorded by just the five guys (no studio musicians supplementing...yet): brian, mike, carl, dennis, and david marks. this was one of the periods in which al jardine had left the band to return to school, thus no Al on this LP. The vocal tracks were done on the 14th, and the backing tracks done on the 16th. South Bay Surfer, The Surfer Moon, Our Car Club, Your Summer Dream, Hawaii, Surfers Rule (take 10 used on the LP), and In My Room (take 13 makes the final cut) were also done on these dates.
btw...if you don't have one....a copy of "The Beach Boys...the Definitive Diary of America's Greatest Band On Stage And In The Studio", by Keith Badman (a Backbeat Book publication, 2004) is a MUST HAVE for any Beach Boy and Jan and Dean fan (J&D referenced many times in the book). It's a day to day diary of anything they did, anywhere they were (recording dates and info, concerts, rehearsals, et al) in FULL detail, from 1961-1976, and continues on less specifically into the 2000's.
the contract sheet for these Catch a Wave recording dates are included, but it does not specify who sang the line "Don't be afraid...." in question here. I'm gonna guess it was Dennis, in that it doesn't sound like any of the other four in attendance that day (nor does it sound like Al).
One of the reasons I love that song is the way the vocals are structured with Dennis/whoever singing the first line of the verse, then Brian next, then Mike.
First time I ever heard that song was in a high school science class. We were in the auditorium that day to watch a movie about physics or something. The movie started with some serious guy in a lab coat then quick cut to scenes of people surfing with "Catch a Wave" on the soundtrack.

here's a shot of the book cover, to aid you in case you're interested in getting a copy. and again, TONS and TONS of info.and also...that same Surfer Girl session date was co-produced by Voyle Gilmore (signed the Union contract sheet that day)...and you more than likely know his prowess (literally MADE the Kingston Trio, and produced Sinatra's finest Capitol sessions, among other credits).
