Hi David,
My take on this is that if you love your stereo cartridge (you should for what it cost) some effort to use it for mono is justified.
My stuff is more modest in price than yours (hey, I'm an old retired guy) but I think the principles are similar. Absolutely playing mono records in mono is the way to go. On some records the difference can be astonishing. It is not necessary to have a mono cartridge to do that. My main stereo cartridge is a Sonus Blue. I also have a classic mono GE RPX. The GE is of coarse not stereo friendly so it must be kept away from stereo records. I have a dedicated mono phono stage which can select either channel or sum them for mono. I would say mono playback is almost a must for most mono records. It is pretty easy to go A-B mono to stereo with the Sonus. Other than the huge output from the old GE the sound is very similar.
I'm guessing that if you can arrange mono playback with the Benz you will have to go some to beat it with a dedicated mono cartridge. For the cost of an acceptable mono cartridge plus head block you may be able to arrange summing to mono.
With MM cartridges Y cables have been used for summing before the phono stage effectively. With the low impedance of the cartridge the Y cable thing may not work as well with an MC. Do you use an SUT or does the phono stage have an MC input? The Y cable thing may work after the SUT. Mono folks have argued the relative merit of parallel connection (Y cable) vs. series connection of the coils. If you don't have an SUT the series arrangement may work just fine if you select a higher input impedance on your phono stage.

Thanks, Phil. In fact, I do use a Bob's Devices SUT before the Fosgate. You are suggesting that I use a Y connector out of the SUT, connected in an inverse way to another one that I plug into the Fosgate. I've done this before when experimenting with playing 78's - I guess I hadn't thought of it in this context. I'll give it a try.
And please, correct me if I am misunderstanding you...
Hi David,
Yes, that is what I had in mind. Let us know how it works out.
