The III is a better cartridge than the II but the II is still a very good cartridge and you can get excellent aftermarket styli for it.
If your friend offers to sell it to you for $50 or so, jump at it.

He alleges that it cost $400 back then...I just don't believe it. Considering a new production AT-150MLX...
I still have the original box that my new V15 type ll came in and the price sticker says $67.50. That was sometime in the late 1960's.
By 1981 there was no Shure that was $400 according to my 1981 buyers guide.
Thanks for the info. It's just the seller's scheme to lure me into the purchase...
