My friend who has many vintage amplifiers, turntables and cartridges told me that Shure V15 Type II is better and was more expensive than all subsequent V-15 cartridges (Type III, IV and V).
Is it really so or he just wants to sell it?

Harry Weisfeld told me a couple of times years ago the V15 V MR(not the xMR)was the most accurate cartridge he knew defined as making a record sound as close as possible to second generation master tapes he owned.
The comments about the type 111 being more sought after today but the Type 11 still being a good cartridge ring true to me also.
I've read enough about how the quality of the Shure replacement styli went down once they were made in Mexico to believe there's some truth to that too so a Jico or other quality replacement is probably a good way to go.
I had a new type 11 back in the day and it didn't sound as good as I thought it should but I continued to use it anyway as my financial resources at age 20 were limited.
One day I was looking trough some audio magazines and I found a review of the type 11 that said it needed to be loaded with 400pf.
I figured that was an easy try to I soldered 200pf silver micas across the phono inputs and the tonal quality that bothered me was gone.
The III is a better cartridge than the II but the II is still a very good cartridge and you can get excellent aftermarket styli for it.
If your friend offers to sell it to you for $50 or so, jump at it.

He alleges that it cost $400 back then...I just don't believe it. Considering a new production AT-150MLX...
I still have the original box that my new V15 type ll came in and the price sticker says $67.50. That was sometime in the late 1960's.
By 1981 there was no Shure that was $400 according to my 1981 buyers guide.
Thanks for the info. It's just the seller's scheme to lure me into the purchase...
That's actually kind of funny. Ever since I even knew of such stuff the Type III was widely considered to be the best of the bunch. In fact I still read about people trying to get their hands on one because it's the one that is most highly recommended by the greatest number of people on boards such as this.
I had one many years ago and I liked it, but I never had another iteration to which I could compare it. I also had it mounted on a pretty average turntable (Pioneer PL 570) so I can't say for sure that it was the bee's knees.
I had an awful lot to learn about sound, equipment and audio in general back then.
i like the IV better, do not have a V so i cannot comment on the V.
