In Reply to: RE: Music Matters' 33rpm titles for 2015! posted by kuma on December 20, 2014 at 01:06:11
Sort of an unrelated comment (maybe not)- I subscribed to their series when they were releasing 45 rpm reissues and bought nearly every one of them. They truly are the crown jewels in my collection and I have a few dozen original Blue Note pressings.
I bought a few of the 33 rpm which sound excellent. I had a pressing issue with one of them and their customer service went WAY above and beyond what I would have ever expected.
Follow Ups:
How the upcoming Maiden Voyage 33 will fair with original pressing.
I am assuming it was originally released in stereo?
I have ABed their 45 Undercurrent and 33 version and no contest. The improvements were larger than I thought latter is much more dynamic and in tune.
Now that's just one title so I don't know the rest, however. I've a friend with many of their 45s and when I told him how great the MM's 33 was he was none too happy to rebuy some of them again. :/
Maiden Voyage did originally have a stereo release (mono at the same time as well).
I'd like to hear the 33 rpm Music Matters Undercurrent. So the 45 rpm format doesn't have any advantages in dynamics, etc? I've read the 33 rpm version is brighter.
I might have to pick this one up and do the comparison since it's such amazing music.
sounds like the 45 rpm version running in a wrong speed. ( slower )
Yes, the 33 rpm's dynamics are much better and clarity and immediacy improve, too. It just gives you more of live feeling of musicians playing in the real time.
I see why some folks think it sounds brighter as you think it's running faster than the 45s.
I still Wish this piano intro was brilliant as the rest of instruments, but the new version is much clearer than the 45s. I can hear deeper into his subtle nuances, phrasing and laser sharp articulation in that I have gained even more respect for his art.
Ultimately the format or giving wider space for grooves would have an advantage, but apparently the hardware, cabling and cutter head process improvement in the front end paid dividend even with the 33 rpm. You should be able to hear straight away that the noise floor is much lower on the 33, for instance. And timing overall is much improved.
Thanks for the detailed post, I appreciate it.
I compared Soul Station with the 33 rpm and preferred the old Music Matters 45 rpm.
But when it came to Page One I preferred the Music Matters one over the Analogue Productions 45 rpm. So I think it is case by case. Both were done by the same remastering team. Oh and as you know the Music Matters jackets are a huge improvement over the Analogue Productions.
report back when you have done the AB.
I only have the Soul Station on 33. Undercurrent 45 was the last 45 pressings of any sort I bought.
I *bouhgt in* to the Analogue Procutions' 45 series because they were doing many of Bill Evans titles.
I agree that Analogue Production's cover printing is horrendous. See the difference on their jacket even compared to OJC's. The bleached out one on the left is the Analogue Production pressing.
