It’s with much sadness that I note the passing yesterday of my good friend Ronnie Bedford. Ronnie worked his entire career as a professional Jazz drummer and in more recent years, as a music instructor at Northwest College here in Powell, Wyoming. Ronnie began drumming as a teen, with Gene Krupa as his primary inspiration. His first recording session was with Louis Prima, for Columbia Records. Prima advised Ronnie to “Swing as hard as you can kid!” A skilled and versatile drummer, Ronnie played as a sideman for countless notables in the Jazz world, including Sam Donahue, Buddy Defranco, Benny Goodman, Bobby Hackett, Chuck Wayne, Johnny Richards, Rod Levitt, Hank Jones, Jack Reilly, Dick Meldonian, Arnett Cobb, Derek Smith, Walter Norris, Bill Watrous, Benny Carter, Chris Connor, Morgana King, Bobbi Rogers, Arthur Prysock, and many more. In more recent years, Ronnie brought Jazz musicians to Wyoming for the Yellowstone Jazz Festival and other concerts. As a leader, Ronnie released four CDs in the past 15 years. Ronnie joined me as co-host for a series of radio shows, in which we featured Jazz and on one occasion, Classical. His appreciation and knowledge of the music and personal anecdotes about the musicians made these shows truly special. RIP my friend, there’s music in heaven today.
