Hi fellow Inmates,
A friend of mine recently installed the SME V 12 to his TNT JR upgraded to MK6. He sent me some pictures . He would like to get your opinions regarding the installation & suggestions if any to improved the aesthetics.
For me personally I don't like how it looks in the picture,I've not seen it in the flesh however ,nor heard it yet. I will ask him to sent me a photo of the whole Turntable w/ this arm installed and will try to post it in the next few days.
Please give your opinions
Thanks,
mondial

I mounted my SME 312S in a similar overhanging manner on the custom wood plinth of my ROK B-12H idler. It looks a little better because the wood is more integrated.
In my case, with the idler setup, I found the noise isolation and sound to be much better with the Riggle VTAF under my arm. It is a bit a of a pain to rebuild the input wiring of the SME tonearm but worth it in my case. You could use the VTAF in the present mounting pod but you would need to drill and tap two holes for the clamp screws.
Best regards,
Mike
It looks fine to me. You can't do the impossible, like a square peg in a round hole! Your friend will just be spinning his wheels trying to improve that setup!
Thanks guys for your reply .
Here is another photo.
The alignment protractor supplied with SME tonearms is very simple to use and extremely accurate. If his tonearm can be aligned with the SME protractor, then it is mounted correctly. It looks good in this photo as far as I can tell.
Happy Holidays,

Hi John ,
He was able to align the cartridge using the SME protractor. I have not listened to it however.

If the tonearm is able to be aligned, then it is mounted correctly. No worries!
We need a picture taken from directly above in order to assess the mounting distance. It appears the tonearm might be mounted too far from the platter, but that cannot be determined without seeing the entire platter and arm from directly above the turntable.
On the other hand, perhaps the turntable is not designed for a 12-inch tonearm. It is obvious from the picture below that the VPI JMW 12-inch tonearm must be mounted on an outrigger that overhangs the edge of the turntable plinth.
Well, as usual, John is correct. My post is incorrect.
I went over and measured, and the measurement from the center of the platter to the pivot point of my 12" arm is about 11 1/2 inches. That would bring you to a point just short of the foot at the right rear of the TT. It would not be possible to mount the SME arm, which has a substantial base, within the TT plinth space.
The VPI arm, while overhanging the plinth is still within the space defined by the 4 legs of the TT which, as you can see is larger than the plinth itself. Long ago I constructed a cover for my TNT which tightly encloses the space defined by the legs and it also encloses the arm. Hence my too rapidly advanced conclusion.
Thank you Mel ,Gary & John for the reply. I will try to ask my friend for another photo of the entire top plinth so measurements can be made.

I have a 12" (VPI) arm on a TNT. It should not be necessary to have the base overhang as this one does. The TNT was designed to accommodate a 12" arm.
I think it looks weird. I just don't think a tonearm mount should be half-on and half-off the table like it is on this one. Your friend has two excellent pieces of equipment. I don't see this is as the best way to use them together. Isn't there a proper arm board that will work with both?
