OK, but the magnetic force is very short-range. Even a mm or so can make a big difference. I've done the experiment.

It's hard to tell from the photo how thick that pan is. The point is, you REALLY want to be close to the distance from the subplatter it will be at when playing a record. A mm lower than you measure could dramatically increase the force, because of the magnetic attraction.
