When I think of turntables, here are two examples of prototypical models that come to mind.
The first is a classical Denon table, which certainly dates me and my perspective. But this is just how, in my head, a turntable should look.
The second is a classical Thorens, but with what strikes me as the quintessential tonearm, an old SME.
Feel free to share your prototypical examples--I'm sure there is quite a variety.

I agree with Larry that a prototypical turntable should be as simple as possible like my SG-3/Sumiko MMT. Hardwood plinth, on/off switch, manual arm lift, manual belt change to 45 RPM and a dust cover.
My first turntable: Pioneer PL12D. Rated the best turntable under $100 in 1973 (a chunk of change back then). All the essentials, no frills. On/Off/Queuing, 33/45 select, built in overhang check, VTF and antiskate. Can't beat it with a stick....

That has got to be the most often posted picture on Vinyl Asylum.
Love it!

Freak out...Far out...In out....
...is virtually anything with a plinth with four corners and a dustcover.
Pretty simple.
This one fills the bill for me ...

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Hard to beat the SP-15. Here's mine spinning a 95 year old 14" Pathe disc at 80 RPM.
if you do not need speed adjustment...there is the SP 10 MK II if you need speed adjustment you need an SP 10 MK III. but we are in min twice or many times the price of the SP 15. In its price range it is truly a champ.

True terror is to wake up one morning and discover that your high school class is running the country.

Funny how many turntables are ruled out with those simple criteria!
