A friend wants to get a tt for his non-audiophile brother for Christmas. I see the Yamaha in question on CL for $200 - looks to be in good shape. Whuddya think? There are also a few Tech. 1200's listed, but without dustcover and not in as good shape cosmetically, and more $$$. BTW - what's the diff between 1200 and 1210? Just in case, does KAB or anybody sell inexpensive dust covers for Tech. 1200's?

replace all the electrolythics in it. You will thank me later :). I would opt for the Yamaha, most SL-1200s are beaten to death.

Given the choice of a nice D6 or a beat 1200, I'd suggest the D6 for your friedn's brother. It is built well, sounds good and the auto shut-off is a nice feature.Be aware of two things: the D6 has no VTA adjustment and if memory serves, the cueing is not damped. I looked at the manual on Vinyl Engine to check and it seems to bear this out, but it is a bit ambiguous.
A great starter table. Personally, I prefer the 1200, but finding a nice one is likely to cost twice as much and your friend's brother will likely be delighted with the D6.
Good luck !

The 1210 is the same as the 1200 but meant for non-U.S. sales. It has a selectable power input for 110V 60Hz vs (I think) 220v 50hz. Consensus is they are essentially the same table and should be thought of as completely interchangeable.
I've never heard the yamaha you are asking about but I suspect it is very good. I am a big fan of vintage yamaha equipment. I don't know if it is as good, better or worse than the 1200 but I'm sure its good.

The 1210 is a 1200 in black vice silver.
I'd take the Yamaha over the technics in a New York Minute.
Used to sell both back in the day.

I have a YP-D8 and it sounded noticeably better then my 1200 so I sold the 1200 and haven't regretted it.
I would get the YP-D6.
