is being given vinyl. Tonight I opened a boxed set of "L'Art do Bruno Walter" that was part of a collection given to me after an estate sale. Right now a pristine copy of Mahler's 4th Symphony is playing. Others from the same gift have been sampled and all have proved to be nearly unplayed and equally pristine.
Sure beats what is usually found in the thrifts around here.
Follow Ups:
Boxes I have been given, not only free but still sealed, include: complete Mahler symphonies (Solti), complete Rachmaninov symphonies and major orchestral works (Ashkenazy), complete Mendelssohn symphonies and major orchestral works (Abbado).
And LPs that have spent 30-40 years in a sealed box, or even an unsealed but still intact box, tend to be in much better shape than LPs in a jacket, even if still sealed.
I frequently get 'freebies' from customers (who see the huge record collection in my studio) or friends and acquaintances.
Just as an example, here's a collection of about 1,200 45s & LPs that was dropped outside my studio a few months ago by a fellow planning a move to Hawaii. Mostly Pop and Rock. Lots of great LPs in shrink/Near Mint from the 60s. The 45s were in rough shape, most had to be tossed.
Curious, whereabouts in Montana are you? I'm in Powell, Wyoming about 100 miles South of Billings.
Lewistown. About 100 miles north of Billings as the crow flies. 130 as the highway runs.
That is the line that echoes in my brain every time someone gives me gear, records or what-not...
Isn't it great when one person's (assumed) junk is another's diamond in the rough?
Cheers, and happy listening!

The 2nd mov't is so playful and mischievous, the 3rd, so still and transcendent.
My choice Mahler 4th.
