When I was back in school we were assigned listening to various Debussy recordings and picking worst/best with explanations. The worst was Haitink. Half lit is right. Quite a bit of inner parts/details were obscured. I'm not anti-Haitink generally speaking.
I do like/own the Ansermet you mentioned. But I much prefer both Boulez/Cleve. and Maazel/Cleve. rather than the Haitink recordings. Every detail in the scores is brought out, beautiful balances, very nice sound on LP's.
I've never heard the Toscanini. I'll try to check that out.
Follow Ups:
The Haitink Jeux is on Salvatore's list as one of the best-sounding Lp's he's ever heard. As a performance, it works for me.I know Boulez's Columbia-recorded Debussy but the strings tend to get pretty harsh during the climaxes, unfortunately.
I'm not familiar with his final recordings on CD with DGG.
Edits: 11/19/14
for clarity and detail, no question. His Debussy with the Cleveland and Philharmonia (of London) Orchestras is very successful.
