So I guess the question is (if I can accept no repeatable VTA-adjust) how would the SME III compare to a 309?

Yeah, SME tonearms do not have easily adjustable VTA, even the 309. You might want to get a VPI tonearm or something with easily adjustable VTA. My Technics SL-1200 tonearm has on-the-fly adjustable VTA.

Disclosure, I am a VPI dealer. I really like the new 3D printed tonearm and the VTA is adjustable on the fly.
