I think that I may already know the answer, but yesterday my HW 16.5 record cleaning machine platter motor started to stall. It reached the point where it wouldn't turn at all. The platter will spin by hand in both directions, something that I don't think that it did before. I bought this as a used machine from an individual a couple of years ago, so I don't know wham type of dealer support to expect.
anyone else have this happen? Is the motor cooked or is this something that is repairable?
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike! I you haven't done so already, drop us and email or toss a message on our support forum and one of my guys will get you figured out.
The advice that Frank gave could get you all set. Not sure how old your machine is but the cork mat is actually in two piece. There is actually a small removable circle in the middle that you can pull off to get to the screws. That is assuming the previous owner didn't change it up or if the machine isn't so old that it was made before we had the removable circle.

Regardless of what table you buy or own as long as you're spinning vinyl you're doing the right thing!
Thanks for the reply. The machine actually has a foam mat and not a cork one and the serial number is in the low 13,000s. It will be thanksgiving before I can take a look at it since I work out of town. If I run into a problem I most certainly will drop a line on the forum.
Thanks,
Mike
If the Mat you have doesn't appear to have a central cutout like the cork mat does, then, where you feel the 3 indentations on the platter, simply take an exacto-utility knife and cut 3 small circles in those areas to access the 3 screws which should be Phillips Screws.
Lift platter off, there you will see the Platter-Motor Arbor, and there are either 1, or 2 allen set screws. I believe there is a flat on the Motor Spindle. You will want to insure you place the allen locking screws onto the flat of the spindle before tightening.
Replace platter, you are done.
After locating the screw positions, cut two sides of an equilateral triangle which would cover each screw. Then you should be able to lift the flap to expose the screw and fold it back in place when finished.

Try the forum at VPI. They should be able to help.
I don't know what the problem is, but, customer support?
Call - email - smoke signal - carrier pigeon; they will take care of you!
Not a problem.
I've had a similar thing happen several times with my HW 17f. Luckily, I found it to be an easily fixed problem. It's been a few years since it last happened, and I'm having trouble remembering exactly the steps that were involved...I believe what I did was first remove the platter. Under the platter, I found there were two or three screws holding the spindle to the motor. Those screws had come loose. All I did was re- tighten those screws, then reattach the platter. After this, hundreds more records were cleaned before the problem popped up again.
My VPI RCM is 12 years old; it has cleaned probably 2000 records and it still works like brand new. Thing is build to last forever!

My 16.5 did the same thing. In those days, they glued down the cork mat and you had to pull it off to get to the screws.
I never bothered replacing the cork, I now run with an AQ sorbothane mat. If you have a recent model it should have an inner cork circle that can be removed to access the screws.
It has a glued-down foam mat. I can feel 3 indentations around the spindle. I guess that might be them.
Thanks
You could draw a circle around the three screws and cut the cork with a razorblade so you don't have to remove the entire mat.
Did it stop after you cleaned a few LPs?
The 16.5 has a overheat protection built in, which will shut the motor off untill it has cooled down enough.
I had cleaned 6-8 LPs. I have had other sessions where I have cleaned many more records without this issue. The weak platter issue remained even after letting it cool down.Mike
