"Life without music is a mistake" (Nietzsche)
Follow Ups:
I really like side 1 and 2. Very recognizably Floyd and to me it sounds more like 70's Floyd rather than 90's Floyd. Better than average production, flat quiet vinyl - until I got to the third side.
Side 3 had some obvious groove noise and some extreme distortion on a good chunk of that side. Side 4 was more of the same although not as bad. I can't comment on the music on those two sides because I was too distracted (pissed off!) by the shitty pressing.
I'm glad Amazon has a great return policy. I'll try at least one more copy.

I just ordered my copy from Amazon today. I'll let you know how mine comes out.
See ya. Dave
We must of got our copies from the same run. You described my 4 side perfectly.
Regards,
Don Griffith
My vinyl version arrived last week, and I have now listened to all four sides. The recording quality is excellent (though mine is married by some scuffs on the first track of Side 3 which produced audible crackle), and I have to say this album sounds gorgeous. To me it sounds very much like a farewell, and also indeed sounds like a set of outtakes, in the sense that the musical inspiration isn't as intensely high as on previous Floyd albums, and that there is no strong unifying theme running through the music (apart from the sense of quiet nostalgia and of course the tribute it represents to the late, lamented Richard Wright). As has already been mentioned, there are plenty of echoes of previous Floyd songs. I can't even think of it as ambient background music, since there is definitely something being said musically in the majority of the tracks which would distract me if it was playing in the background.
All the same, a Floyd album has never convinced me completely on first listening, though all except "More" and "The Final Cut" have ended up as stayers for me. I have put the digital download on my laptop and iPhone, so I'll have more opportunities over the next few weeks for more relaxed assessment of the album as a whole.

I must be in the minority. Sounds like something you'd hear in an airport.
I'm not sure if you're in the minority but I tend to agree with you. I found the album pleasant but wandering and not very engaging. I put it in the category of background music - which is at least better than elevator music in my book!I don't think I could just sit there and listen, again. I was working at my computer with the album playing in the background. It was just so so. I'm glad I didn't spend extra for the LP set. I have the basic CD.

A friend lent me his CD to check out. I didn't find it very engaging either. Yawn...

Agree with Dave on it being a coda - that was exactly the word that came to mind the first time I played it. Lots of quotes and references to previous works - some obvious, some more subtle. If you take it on those terms, quite satisfying and at times moving.
Recording and pressing are good. Cover is a superb example of printing.
quoted from previous work. i think it is inventive to distract the imagination and build on previous ideas.

Absolutely love it. The wife and I played it yesterday and had flashbacks of older Pink Floyd sessions. The sound is somewhat enchanting in a Pink Floyd way. The recording is superb with great spaciousness and clear delineation of instruments. Overall, a very satisfying purchase.
Superb mastering and pressing of outtakes from the Division Bell. Eno had a hand in it and it shows. If regarded as a soundscape or coda it's well worthwhile. File next to Atom Heart Mother and Meddle.
"File next to Atom Heart Mother and Meddle."
That's quite an endorsement.
"Lost my shape - trying to act casual."
Now I gotta get it!
"Echoes" (from Meddle) is my favorite piece by Pink Floyd and Atom Heart Mother (the entirety) is close behind; unfortunately a very a good system required to bring out the best of AHM which could have been recorded better. ;)
