I am looking for recommendations for a step up transformer for my new Denon 103r.My vintage Sherwood S-5000 has just recently been rebuilt by Michael Samra and sounds magnificent, however, the phono stage is only capable of amplifying signals from a moving magnet or very high output moving coil.
I am pretty handy with a soldering iron so I am not opposed to diy or kits.
I realize there is a ton of stuff on the web regarding the Denon 103. That's the problem - there's too much information!
I would like to stay under $600 if possible. Maybe I would be better off with a Phonomena II outboard phono stage for $600 - dunno????
Thanks.

I ended up going with a semi diy cinemag 3440ah setup. Thanks guys.

Consider contacting Dave Slagle (a fellow asylum inmate). He is a xfmr winder with much experience with the 103 series.
Thank you gentlemen for all the recommendations, they have helped me narrow my focus considerably.
I will let you know how it turns out.

Opus 33 1/3
excellent SUT for the Denon 103
lots of setting options, tube output, lots of tweaking possible. Sounds great. Thinking of getting a 103r to go with mine.
....instead of Anaheim, CA.
38/150 ohms at 50K. So roughly 1:34 and 1:18 gain.
OK, not for a while as I am using an MM cartridge most of the time these days. Works WELL with my SoundSmith re-tipped Denon 103D.Also allows for running two TT, one with a pass through and no step-up, which comes in handy if one of your TT is set up with MM cartridge and the other with an MC cartridge.

You could maybe find a secondhand Audutorium 23 SUT which is made for the 103. It should be close to your budget if you could track one down.
The Auditorium 23 SUT is definitely worth seeking out in IMHO. I've used it with both the 103R and Denon/Zu 103 with excellent results. Takes both 103's to their full potential.
The 37.5 Ohm impedance taps were perfect.

Thanks,
I took your advice and went with a semi diy Cinemag 3440ah setup.

Here's my parts list from my DIY project. Maybe it will help.
From CineMag:
Two 3440APC transformers with the "reduced low frequency distortion laminations" for $75 each + shipping. I think this is marketed as their "Blue" version. The regular (Red) 3440APC are $51.14 currently if you want to save about $50 on the pair.
From Mouser:
One 1455K1201BK Project Box 4.72" x 3.07" x 1.69" for $19.26 plus shipping.
From Guitar Electronics:
One SWM22-21 Double Pole ON/ON Bat Handle Mini Switch - Gold for $8.49 plus shipping. I couldn't find a gold DPDT On On anywhere else.
From Parts Connexion:
Two pair ConneX Connector RCA Female jacks "Tiffany" style, outside chassis mount jacks for $7.50 / pair + shipping
One VAMPIRE BP-.5 ground post, hard gold plating over nickel over brass for $9.95 + shipping.
Total cost of parts, about $232 including shipping.
Thanks for the help. That's why I love this place - so many knowledgeable inmates.
Your list looks a lot like the one I found from Shannon Park's "budgie" sut (3440-ahcp blue label).
In any event, that's what I will be building.
