Just get the Classic reissue of the Reiner/CSO if you want the Reiner erformance. I've got it. It sounds great. Otherwise, get any other performance you desire.
Here's the deal: I got to hear the thing in concert ["live" as people are wont to say, even though that's ungrammatical] in an ideal seat in a good hall. After that experience, listening to any recording of the piece is like eating cardboard. Really.

Each time I hear a familiar piece live (the solo piano program I attended tonight included the Brahms Paganini Variations), as well as each time I hear a piece for the first time (tonight it was Rachmaninoff op 23 no 2 Prelude in B-flat-- wow). These occasions are frequent reminders about my preference for a good performance in a good room, witnessed by a good house. Keeps my expectations about recording playback at home in check, too ;)
