I was in a store yesterday and there were a large number of records from a late local collector. Batches of records from this collection have been popping up in thrifts for probably 5 years now, and they keep on coming. I started seeing a lot of Scheherazades and just for grins, I started counting them. I gave up before I got through everything and I was at 85 copies of the piece! There were some duplicates, but there had to be at least 50 different recordings. Holy cow, who has the time to listen to Scheherazade even 50 times, much less listen to all of the half-assed budget label junk that was there? I still like the piece, but even counting when I was obsessed with it as a kid, I don't think I'm up to that number. You name it, it was there. I did actually pick up a couple. I got a nice purple label of the Goossens on Everest (which doesn't get mentioned enough in these periodic discussions) and an early black label Vanguard stereo with Mario Rossi and Vienna.FWIW, I'm with Rbolaw on this one. I like the two Columbia Ormandys, although, for performance, I actually prefer the early mono to the stereo.

I have about a dozen of the Reiner Scheherazade, some reissues, some original shaded dog, 2 Cheskys, noisy white dog, etc. Another dozen or so of different orchestras/conductors. When I went to music school, I didn't like the piece, but then got a chance to play it a few times and voila, 30 years later I listen to it a few times a month.

I also wonder how many recordings of a given piece we need. Scheherazade wouldn't seem to me to be one where there would be such a divergence of potential interpretations that many are needed. If I count mentally, I think I have 4 - Reiner (on SACD and vinyl), Beecham (Angel vinyl - I do wonder how much better the EMI vinyl might be), Stokowski (the National Phil on RCA, not the Phase -4, which supposedly is a better performance), and a CD of Mehta, given to me by someone as a gift. I do think the Reiner performance is a little stiff, but I'm in a minority there, and certainly these recordings tell me everything I feel I need to know about this work.
I haven't really counted, but I suspect the work of which I have the most recordings would be Beethoven's 9th. There the count goes to closer to 15.I even have multiple recordings made by the same conductor -two each of Furtwangler, Karajan and Szell. I'll bet there are others with 50 or more.
....and some of the 'budget-label junk' are actually reissues of important overseas performances that were not on major labels. For example, you can get the Vox Cum Laude of the Fedoseyev performance that originally appeared on Melodiya. It is a most interesting performance, with savage intensity in places, almost the polar opposite of the lyrical Beecham.
about the budget issues. While there is some crap, there are also a lot of interesting performances not available elsewhere. That's just the kind of thing that I enjoy digging up, and I did just that on the same trip, which I will write about separately. I should have chosen my words more carefully.
Still got some serious listening to do!

If you look at Richard Mohr's excellent notes on the back of Reiner's Scheherazade, he counts two dozen versions on record, and he was writing in 1960.
Agree re Goossens, and Everest. I would have taken that one too.
