I agree completely about Ansermet's Song of the Nightingale. One of the best examples of this work and Anserment's work on record that I've heard. And I like his Scheherazade with the PCO very much too. But here again, the underrated but best version on vinyl for my money is Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, circa 1963.
Alas, in his final years recording for RCA, Ormandy made some uninspired records, whether because of his advanced age or RCA's incompetence, and that seems to have sealed his reputation among record collectors.
If you have the original RCA Reiner version, there are very good notes by Richard Mohr on the back. Too bad if Chesky couldn't reproduce them.
Follow Ups:
His EMI Strauss "Also Sprach Zarathustra" is one of the most intense ever recorded, but it's Digital.
I also prefer his Bartok Mandarin Suite to all others.
Yes, maybe the problem was RCA, not that Ormandy was getting old. RCA really botched some classical stuff in the 1970s. Some critics have blamed the aging Ormandy, but what do they know? ;-)
